“I usually play the Middle and Lower Nines which, by any standards, constitute a fine test. There, I can find a lot of golf shots similar to those I would encounter on tournament courses. Naturally, the pins at Dun Laoghaire would be a lot more generous, but the crucially important factor is the presence of water. I’m thinking of holes like the fourth, sixth and eighth on the Middle Nine.
I particularly like the par-four fourth, which could be driveable, depending on the conditions. Excellent, strategic design makes it a real test. As for course construction: all the key details were addressed at Dun Laoghaire, including drainage. They did a tremendous job.
Away from the course there is the attraction of the driving range which I use from time to time - as inconspicuously as I can, though people don’t tend to bother me when I’m there.”
